We’ve figured out a way of identifying the desired job and are even done with making a state-of-art resume. Now is the SHOWTIME! It’s time to set the ball rolling.
Step 3: Contacting the potential employer
Going the HR way – this is the traditional way and can be done directly i.e. you contact the HR (recruiting manager) yourself through phone or email or through a job agent/staffing firm. Here again, it’s imperative that you make an impact in the first opening line of phone conversation or email. The best way of doing so is through a warm greeting and salutation.
Connect online – Relatively new and very effective way of reaching your dream employer. This enables you to contact the relevant person in charge directly through social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, blogosphere) or job portals. However, make sure you don’t spam the person in case you don’t hear from him/her.
Do your background research about the company and the person you are trying to contact. A simple Google search is often a good way to begin. Try and find common grounds of interaction like online groups or wrangle out an online reference from a professional associate.
Step 4: Breeze through the Interview
Got the call for the much awaited job interview?? This calls for a pat on the back for creating a great impression through your C.V.! Now comes the real litmus test! Once again, all you need is some amount of preparation and you are sure to win through this as well.
Strengthen your impressions – The key is to further build on the positive impression you’ve set on the recruiter. So how do you do that? Answer is simple – you focus on what the employer is seeking in a candidate and communicating effectively that you have all that it takes to be the BEST CANDIDATE! But is conveying the desired message really this simple?
Passing the right signal – Interestingly, it’s been noted that in any face-face communication it’s the non-verbal part that plays a bigger role. According to an international survey, 55% of impact is determined by body language—postures, gestures, and eye contact, 38% by the tone of voice, and 7% by the content or the words used. And this is what a smart candidate like you must cash on! Simply put, apart from focussing on what you say, you also need to focus on how you say it.
Going the extra mile – Few things that you should keep in mind before going for the interview includes dressing appropriately, matching the interviewer’s speed of talking i.e. if s/he is a slow talker try to match that speed or vice-versa, having a smile and a positive, open attitude towards the interview.
Last but not the least; be proactive by demonstrating an interest in the company through asking relevant questions. This will give you more insights about the management style and the work culture of the organisation. Remember it’s not just your interviewer who’s judging you but you too who’s judging if it’s indeed the right job and right place for you! So make the extra effort to find out everything about the company, the people and the job!
